Course Overview
Meltdowns are part of child development, and in children with delays and special needs, meltdowns can be more intense, more frequent, and persist later through childhood than neuro-typically developing children. This course reviews why meltdowns occur, how to recognize when they are reactive versus deliberate, and how to support the child in a meltdown to decrease intensity and duration of the meltdowns.
In this course, you will learn how to do the following:
- Identify reasons children have meltdowns
- List things to avoid doing while a child is having a meltdown
- Have an understanding of physical items that can be used while a child is in a meltdown
- Identify the 5 step plan that can be used during a meltdown in order to help calm a child
- Identify 4 things to remember when taking action during a meltdown
Who Should Take this Course
This course is intended for parents and other caregivers who want to understand why children have meltdowns and learn what actions to take when a child is in a meltdown.
Time to Complete
It should take about 1 hour to complete this entire course. Your progress will be saved so you do not need to complete the entire course in one sitting. Upon successfully completing this course, you will be awarded a certificate.
About the Instructor – Allison LeBouef, LOTR
Allison LeBouef is an occupational therapist and co-founder and co-clinical director of Pediatric Therapy and Learning Center. She has 20+ years of experience evaluating and treating children with developmental challenges, as well as training other OTs to do the same. She holds numerous certifications, most notably Sensory Integration and Praxis (SIPT), Profectum DIR Fellows–Level 2, and SOS Approach to Feeding.

Pediatric Therapy and Learning Center (PTLC) is a play-based therapy center founded by Allison LeBouef, LOTR, and Marsha LeGoullon, CCC-SLP, in 2007 in Lafayette, Louisiana.
