Course Overview

This course on Sensorimotor Levels of Play will review the importance of play in development. It will provide an in-depth description of the early levels of sensorimotor play, including the motor and language development within each level, as well as the sequence of the development of sensorimotor play into symbolic play. It will also seek to educate clinicians on how to identify atypical play in children with delays and/or disabilities, including the use of sensorimotor play schemas into toddlerhood and beyond.

In this course, you will learn how to do the following:

  1. List the levels of sensorimotor development.
  2. Identify the age ranges for the levels of sensorimotor play in typically developing children.
  3. Identify play behaviors associated with each level of sensorimotor play.
  4. Identify types of language skills associated with each level of sensorimotor play.
  5. Utilize clinical reasoning questions to organize and increase a child’s play.
  6. Identify multiple play activities that can be used to support children with atypical sensorimotor development.

Who Should Take this Course

This course is intended for professionals who work with children who are experiencing delays in play. It is intended to review early levels of play skills, assist practitioners in identifying the level of play the child is participating in, and to expand the child’s play repertoires.
