Course Overview

Most neuro-typical people maintain a just-right state of alertness effortlessly throughout their day. If they get a little antsy or sleepy at work, they sometimes chew on a pencil, get a snack, or go for a walk to keep themselves in this just-right state.

Children with developmental delays and learning challenges often have difficulty maintaining a just-right level of alertness. Parents may notice the following: 1) the child gets hyper very quickly and has trouble paying attention, 2) they may shut down if they are upset or confused, or 3) it may be tough to get them going.

All of these challenges may result in difficulty learning, excessive tantrums, impulsivity, and the child may be hard to keep safe. It may limit their experiences in movement and other areas of development. They may constantly be in a state of overreacting or underreacting and have difficulty coping with simple changes in routines.

This course will help you learn to identify various states of alertness/arousal, what can cause a child to move from one state to another, and some strategies to help move your child toward a “just-right” state.

Who Should Take this Course

This course is intended to help parents and other caregivers identify various arousal/alertness patterns in children, as well as provide an overview of the types of environments, tasks, and interactions that support the child’s regulation.
